Weld Neck (WN) Flanges
Weld Neck flanges feature a long tapered hub that provides excellent stress distribution and is butt-welded to the pipe, making them the strongest and most reliable flange type. They are the preferred choice for high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical service applications where joint integrity is paramount.
Slip-On (SO) Flanges
Slip-On flanges slide over the pipe end and are fillet-welded on both sides, providing easy alignment and installation. While not as strong as Weld Neck flanges, they are cost-effective for moderate-pressure applications up to Class 600.
Blind Flanges
Blind flanges are solid discs used to seal the end of a piping system, valve, or pressure vessel opening. They are subject to the highest bending stresses of any flange type due to the lack of a supporting pipe hub.
Socket Weld (SW) Flanges
Socket Weld flanges have a recessed socket that receives the pipe end, then fillet-welded around the outside. They are designed for small-bore (NPS 1/2" to 4"), high-pressure piping where butt-weld preparation is impractical.
Plate (Flat) Flanges
Plate flanges, also called flat flanges, are simple disc-shaped flanges with a bolt circle and a central bore. They are the most basic and economical flange design, used for low-pressure, non-critical applications primarily in European piping systems.
Lap Joint Flanges
Lap Joint flanges are used in conjunction with a stub end, where the flange slips over the pipe and the stub end is butt-welded to the pipe. This allows the flange to rotate freely for bolt alignment and enables easy dismantling.
Threaded Flanges
Threaded flanges connect to pipes via NPT or BSP threads, eliminating the need for welding. They are used in small-bore, low-to-moderate pressure applications and in situations where welding is not feasible (e.g., explosive atmospheres or existing lines).
Spectacle Blind Flanges
Spectacle blind flanges, also called figure-8 blinds, consist of a solid disc (blind) and an open ring (spacer) connected by a tie bar. They are permanently installed in piping systems and rotated to either block or allow flow, providing a positive isolation method superior to valves.
Orifice Flanges
Orifice flanges are specialised flanges with radial tapped holes for connecting pressure sensing instruments to measure flow through an orifice plate. They are used in pairs at orifice metering stations for accurate flow measurement of liquids, gases, and steam.
